About the Children's Centre
Edith Kerrison Children's Centre is the lead centre providing services to the families in Custom House and Canning Town.
Services are run in partnership with Keir Hardie Primary School at different venues in the Custom House and Canning Town area .
Universal services
These are drop in sessions that require no booking. Please just come along and arrive no more 10 minutes before the start of the session. Some sessions have a limited capacity and these are marked on the programme. These sessions are offered on first come first served basis. Some examples of our universal services are baby and toddler group, messy play, storytime.
Our sessions are always popular and it is very important to us that you can stay once you arrive. However on very rare occasions we are full to capacity and we may have to close registers due to health and safety reasons. This is more likely in the winter months. We do apologize if you are inconvenienced.
Targeted services
These services may be provided by our health partners and sometime require booking, for example Chatterbox. Other health services can be accessed through drop in for example oral health promotion.
Some services are provided by children’s centre staff, for example Baby Massage, Stop the Bottle, Triple P. These may also require booking.
It is important that you look at the programme to see whether you need to book for a session or not.
Please do contact the centre with any enquiries and to book a session that can help you and your family.
Support groups
These services are provided by parent volunteers who are happy to share their experiences with others, for example Excema Support Group, Let Us Communicate. Other professionals provide support groups for example the Breast Feeding group.
Multi professional partnerships
The children’s centre works with a range of other professionals who come to the centre to run a session. For example Workplace provide Information, Advice and Guidance sessions for parents preparing to return to work or study; Newham’s Complex Needs and Dyslexia Service provide a weekly session for all Newham children who need developmental and movement play. Speech and Language Therapists, Health visitors, Midwifery Team, Nutrition Team, St John’s Ambulance, Education Advisors, teachers and other practitioners all work together to provide a comprehensive range of services that may be stand alone or run alongside a universal drop in session.
